With less than five seconds remaining and the game tied at 50, Margaret Miller knew she had to hurry.
“All I was thinking was ‘I gotta go. I gotta go.’ And then I honestly don’t remember much,” the Redbirds senior said.
She caught the outlet pass and dribbled the length of the court to hit the dramatic buzzer beater. It gave De Pere the 52-50 victory over Kimberly in the sectional semi-final. It’s all a blur now for Miller but it was the Papermakers that had stormed back late in the game – erasing a ten-point lead in the final two minutes.
“I was like you have to be kidding me. They hit, what was it, five three-pointers in a row,” Miller recalled. Kimberly’s Sara Rosenow would bank in a deep shot and then make another in the final moments to tie the game up. “That is unheard of and in clutch situations, I was like ‘This is ridiculous!’”
Even as De Pere nearly let this game slip away, it set up the senior and she was completely zoned in.
“I didn’t see much besides the basket and the two defenders,” she said. “I just tried to put it in, I tried to make a strong move and do something to help us win.”
